U19A Tornadoes In Whitby

Jan. 11, 2023

The U19A Timmins Tornadoes started the new year with a tournament in Whitby.

For the first game, they faced a familiar foe in the Metcalf team. The game was a hard-fought contest, and in the end, the Tornadoes prevailed with a 4-1 win.

Dorchester was next in line for the Timmins squad. In a game of inches and split seconds decision on the ice, a few missed plays and missed passes proved costly for the Tornadoes and Dorchester ended up winning 6-3.

The next day, The U19A team had to regroup quickly if they wanted to keep their chances of playing in the semis alive. Timmins has a long-lasting rivalry with the very strong Forest team, and it so happens that they were the first opponent on Saturday. The Tornadoes stepped up their game in a major way and played what is probably their best game so far this year. With a 6-3 win, they were in good shape for the next game.

The last game of the round robin was a teams from the north battle. The Tornadoes were facing the SOO team. Even though the SOO team had struggle until then in the tournament, they showed a lot of grit and did their best to make it very hard for the Timmins team to move on to the semis. After the 1st period, the score was tied at 1-1 and the Timmins crowd was getting nervous. However, the Tornadoes, sticked with their game plan and started the second period with a lot of passion. They scored 7 unanswered goals and won 8-1.

In the semis, Timmins had their work cut out for them. They faced and elite team from Finland. The Finland team, undefeated in their country so far this year, had crushed most of the teams they played in the tournament and were undefeated. The Tornadoes tried their best all the way to the end, but the Finland team proved to be the better team on the ice and won the game 7-2. Even though, the Timmins squad was a little disappointed in the outcome, it was still an unbelievable experience to play against a very strong team from Europe.

The coaching staff was very proud of the U19A Timmins Team’s effort during the tournament. The U19A Tornadoes keep improving every single game and can’t wait to play in the upcoming Guelph tournament.
